The Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Blend (Capsicum chinense), endemic to the district of Moruga in Trinidad, is currently the world's hottest Chili pepper cultivator. The New Mexico State University's Chile Pepper Institute has identified the Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Blend as the newest hottest chili pepper as of February 2012. According to the New Mexico State University Chile Institute, the Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Blend ranks as
high as 2,009,231 SHU on the Scoville scale, making it the hottest chili pepper in the world to date. Moruga Scorpions are truly unique plants that can only be found in one location on the planet, in the southern region of Trinidad.
It is named after Butch Taylor, the owner of Zydeco farms in Woodville/Crosby Mississippi who is responsible for propagating the pepper's seeds. The scorpion; peppers are referred to as such because the pointed end of the pepper is said to resemble a scorpion's stinger. Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper is a chili pepper that was formerly one of the most desired peppers among amateur pepper fans. It has been since
replaced by the world's hottest pepper the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. The Butch T is derived from the Trinidad Scorpion, which is indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago. The Trinidad Jonah 7pot pepper received its name from one pod having enough heat to flavor seven pots of stew. Also referred to as a 7Pod, the average heat level on the Scoville ranges between 800,000 to over 1,000,000.
The yellow Bhut Jolokia is a natural variant of the Bhut Jolokia or Ghost Pepper. It has a heat level close to 400,000 Scoville units.
